Chapter 16

Alec

Our drive home is quiet. The inside of the car crackles not with tension, but a static of anticipation. The thrill of what we’re about to step into thrums through my veins. I know I’ve wanted this from Zane for years. For him to tell me he feels the same is like I’m in an alternate reality. The sky is still blue and we’re still in his car, but none of this feels like it’s real.

“I need to stop at my place for a change of clothes and stuff first. Is that okay?”

“Of course it is. We could stay there, too, if you prefer.”

He shakes his head, lips pressed together in a tight line. “No. You need the hot tub and pain meds tonight. I don’t want you to sacrifice your comfort. I’ll only be a minute.”

“Okay.”

I mean, what else do I say? Zane always puts me first. Even when he barely knew me. At first, I thought it was just him being a good host and tending to his guests. The more time we spent together, the more I noticed he rarely does anything for himself first. It’s a wonder his heart stays in his body. I couldn’t be luckier to have a part of his heart to call my own, though. Maybe I’m selfish to admit that, but it’s the truth.

I don’t know what changed with him since last night, but I’m ready to take the chance. Blaze was right about regretting it if I didn’t take the risk. I might be terrified of a broken heart, but I can’t keep him at arm’s length, even if I wanted to.

He kissed me. I’ve kissed him. I know what he sounds like when he comes. What good would it do to try to slow things down when he’s on board with it?

Zane pulls into his driveway and we both groan. There’s garbage everywhere.

“Didn’t you get special cans?”

“Yes! And the stupid things are hard to use! Ugh. That damn thing better not have broken in again.” He turns to me. “Just ignore it. I’ll be quick.”

“I’m not gonna ignore it, Zane. Give me some gloves and I’ll clean up while you get what you need.”

He concedes to letting me help, and once we get to the back deck, it’s not that bad. I pick up the trash, right the cans and secure the clips. The clips really are hard to use. He’s not lying.

Entering the back door, I toss the gloves into the garbage under the sink and wash my hands. Zane always has lemon scented soap in the kitchen. For years I’ve always thought of him when I used anything lemon scented. I don’t think that will ever change.

“I think I’m ready.”

Spinning around, I find Zane with a small duffel bag in his hand. He bites his lip and his free hand twists the edge of his t-shirt.

“You don’t seem ready.”

He shakes his head and stalks towards me. My breath hitches as he slides his nose along my jaw and his lips stop next to my ear.
