Chapter 16
Alec
Our drive home is quiet. The inside of the car crackles not with tension, but a static of anticipation. The thrill of what weâre about to step into thrums through my veins. I know Iâve wanted this from Zane for years. For him to tell me he feels the same is like Iâm in an alternate reality. The sky is still blue and weâre still in his car, but none of this feels like itâs real.
âI need to stop at my place for a change of clothes and stuff first. Is that okay?â
âOf course it is. We could stay there, too, if you prefer.â
He shakes his head, lips pressed together in a tight line. âNo. You need the hot tub and pain meds tonight. I donât want you to sacrifice your comfort. Iâll only be a minute.â
âOkay.â
I mean, what else do I say? Zane always puts me first. Even when he barely knew me. At first, I thought it was just him being a good host and tending to his guests. The more time we spent together, the more I noticed he rarely does anything for himself first. Itâs a wonder his heart stays in his body. I couldnât be luckier to have a part of his heart to call my own, though. Maybe Iâm selfish to admit that, but itâs the truth.
I donât know what changed with him since last night, but Iâm ready to take the chance. Blaze was right about regretting it if I didnât take the risk. I might be terrified of a broken heart, but I canât keep him at armâs length, even if I wanted to.
He kissed me. Iâve kissed him. I know what he sounds like when he comes. What good would it do to try to slow things down when heâs on board with it?
Zane pulls into his driveway and we both groan. Thereâs garbage everywhere.
âDidnât you get special cans?â
âYes! And the stupid things are hard to use! Ugh. That damn thing better not have broken in again.â He turns to me. âJust ignore it. Iâll be quick.â
âIâm not gonna ignore it, Zane. Give me some gloves and Iâll clean up while you get what you need.â
He concedes to letting me help, and once we get to the back deck, itâs not that bad. I pick up the trash, right the cans and secure the clips. The clips really are hard to use. Heâs not lying.
Entering the back door, I toss the gloves into the garbage under the sink and wash my hands. Zane always has lemon scented soap in the kitchen. For years Iâve always thought of him when I used anything lemon scented. I donât think that will ever change.
âI think Iâm ready.â
Spinning around, I find Zane with a small duffel bag in his hand. He bites his lip and his free hand twists the edge of his t-shirt.
âYou donât seem ready.â
He shakes his head and stalks towards me. My breath hitches as he slides his nose along my jaw and his lips stop next to my ear.
